2015 Watch Exhibitions
Winter and spring seasons are traditionally rich for various exhibitions, expos and conferences. Everyone can find an interesting and fascinating event which will perfectly suit his or her tastes. And connoisseurs of wrist watches are not an exception, as period from January to May offers plenty of exhibitions devoted exactly to timepieces.
The most famous, popular and influential in terms of fashion trends formation is probably Baselworld with its traditional location in the city of Basel, Switzerland. This year it lasted from the 19th to the 26th of March, and during this week the event has attracted more than 150 000 visitors. Unfortunately, worldwide crisis and fast Swiss franc rise up became one of the main topics of the exhibition’s discussions, because these factors in turn led to the increase of production cost. But even in spite of these problems, Baselworld 2015 was extremely successful, and visitors were definitely satisfied with presented novelties and developments. For instance, Rolex has introduced its new brainchild – Cellini Time wristwatch, an impressive combination of luxury, elegance and functionality. Its support holder (39mm in diameter) is incrusted with 62 refined diamonds. For the materials of case and clasp Rolex designers have chosen either white or Everose 18 carat gold. The strap is made of alligator black leather. And, as always, quality of the production is just impeccable.
Patek Philippe, another world famous company, has presented Calatrava Pilot Travel Time model, which design was inspired by the legendary navigation timepieces of the 1930s. This wristwatch is produced of white gold and has a diameter of 42mm. Conservative appearance, but exceptionally reliable mechanism – this is the pure nature of Patek Philippe and they never betray this rule.
Another one watch of Baselworld 2015, which definitely deserves your attention, is Hannibal Minute Repeater Westminster Carillon Tourbillon Jaquemarts, designed and produced by Swiss brand Ulysse Nardin. The design is devoted to Hannibal’s pass through the Alps. And it is so unique and unusual that it can take you plenty of time to explore and examine all the details.
One more large exhibition of watches and jewelry is Inhorgenta held in Munich from the 20th to the 23rd of March 2015. It attracted 1055 participants and over 26000 visitors from more than 25 countries. And this is a great result for the four days event, isn’t it? The exhibition’s main subjects were devoted to so called smart watches and future fashion tendencies. And, obviously, it was not only about the conferences and lectures, but also about presentations and brand-new developments. For instance, Tudor Heritage Black Bay with 41mm in diameter, steel case and rotatable support holder. The strap is made of leather, and it is completely secure. Thanks to special clasp, this timepiece will never fall off your wrist. The mechanism is self-winding, and the energy reserve is 38 hours. Black Bay model is waterproof, and it keeps this quality at the depth up to 200 meters.
Winter of 2015 has been also marked by SIHH event in Genève (right, Swiss cities are very popular for horology exhibitions, and reasons for this are pretty obvious). This year it lasted five days, between the 19th and the 23rd of January. Year of 2015 became absolutely special for SIHH as it was its 25th anniversary – impressive achievement for an exhibition in the modern world of competitors. Sure, this event is rather young (especially in comparison to Baselworld, for example), but it definitely deserves attention of true watch art connoisseur. Just look at this Panerai novelty, introduced at SIHH 2015 – Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech. It is worth your interest at least because of the specific material. When other brands follow traditional gold, steel, platinum, precious stones and so on, Panerai tries something absolutely new. Something like Carbon fiber, and the way of its manufacturing makes every timepiece as unique as a snowflake. Moreover, Carbotech is light and resistant to corrosion, scratches and other types of damages. The wristwatch itself has the self-winding mechanism, energy reserve of 72 hours, date indicator and waterproof feature up to 300 meters of depth. The size is also unusual – 47mm in diameter. Probably, from the first sight it may seem too cumbrous, but its design and quality easy overcome this characteristic.
In case you give preference to really young exhibitions with individual character, check Geneva Time Exhibition. It is an annual event, which is usually held in January. And its main difference from such veterans of watch market as Baselworld is its warmth and predilection to independent watch makers. And this fact turns Geneva Time Exhibition into very important event for collectors.
The first half of the year is already behind, and winter-spring 2015 watch exhibitions had a lot of interesting novelties for their visitors. Now, we have several more months to get ready to another turn of events and to various surprises it can hide. Modern technology develops with the speed of light, so Baselworld, Inhorgenta, SIHH, Geneva Time Exhibition and other watches related events of 2016 seem to be very promising.
