Vacheron Constantin announced a new watch
Vacheron Constantin On Sept. 17 will celebrate its 260th anniversary and will demonstrate what it calls “the most ingenious and sophisticated mechanical watch ever made.”
Before the launching, Vacheron has released some preparatory information about the watch.
The timepiece has two dials, and has been designed absolutely in-house by three Vacheron Constantin watchmakers, who toiled on it for eight years. The watch was engaged by a known, as-yet-unnamed collector. It includes, Vacheron says, “entirely new and unique complications representing the most significant technical advancements in watchmaking in modern times. The new complications had to be calculated, designed and developed from scratch. Thus, a completely new caliber of movement was created unlike any seen before.”
One of the new complications is a dual calendar mechanism that Vacheron Constantin has created for the watch’s perpetual calendar use. It demonstrates data for two dissimilar calendar systems: the traditional Gregorian calendar, which accents months and days; or the ISO 8601 business calendar, which accents the number of the week of the year.
A second unusual calendar characteristic of the timepiece is a seasonal calendar and astronomic scale at the contour of one of the two main dials. This scale has three rings, a ring for the months and days, a ring for the seasons and a ring for the zodiac constellation periods. The scale allows one to compute the movable dates of the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.
The brand does not state the amount of new complications, saying: “This watch has introduced several important brand new complications to the world of watchmaking.” Not a word about the number of entire complications, but it is probable to be more than 16 (the amount of complications in the Tour de l’Ile wristwatch), because Vacheron mentions of the new watch as “the most complicated watch” and “a watch of hitherto unimaginable complication and technical innovation”.
The new timepiece justify hopes: Vacheron has not strove to keep back its keenness for it. The brand states that the investigation and expertise used to invent and designed these and the other new complications “can be considered the greatest contribution to the advancement of mechanical watchmaking since the 1920s.” It said the watch “takes its place as one of the greatest man-made objects in the world.”
